Cavs’ Donovan Mitchell Breaks Silence Amid Constant Rumors
David Richard-USA TODAY Sports

Cleveland Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell is pushing back against reports that he was frustrated with some of his teammates this NBA season. In a recent X post, Mitchell expressed his frustration with the rumors, saying “I’m sick of y’all sometimes.”

The rumors in question, reported by Cleveland.com’s Chris Fedor, claimed that Mitchell grew frustrated with some teammates’ lack of maturity, focus, and playoff-level readiness. However, Mitchell is denying these claims, and it’s clear that he’s had enough of the speculation.

As the Cavaliers look to the future, much of the focus will be on Mitchell’s contract situation. He’s eligible to sign a four-year, $208 million extension with the Cavs starting July 6, and there’s a growing sentiment around the NBA that Cleveland will be able to secure a long-term commitment from him.

However, the team’s head coach, J.B. Bickerstaff, is reportedly in serious jeopardy of losing his job following the loss to the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference semifinals. The organization will take time to decide its future, but it’s clear that changes are on the horizon.

In addition to Mitchell’s contract situation, the Cavs have several other roster questions to answer. Darius Garland, who signed a rookie max extension in July 2022, took a step back this season, and his camp may discuss a potential trade if Mitchell signs an extension.

The Athletic’s report notes that rival executives believe the Cavs will have to evaluate the fit of Mitchell and Garland seriously. It ultimately may have to choose one or the other.

Despite a messy season marred by injuries, the Cavaliers finished fourth in the Eastern Conference for the second straight season and won a playoff series for the first time since LeBron James‘ final year with the club in 2017-18.

As they look to the future, it’s clear that Mitchell will be a key part of their plans, and they’ll need to navigate these roster questions to build a successful team around him.
