New York Jets May Cut Shocking Player Before 2024 Season
Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

As the New York Jets prepare for the 2024 NFL season, no one truly knows what to expect from them. Some believe that they will be Super Bowl contenders, while others are predicting another disappointing year.

With Aaron Rodgers back to full health and ready to take the field again, the hype is rising for the Jets. They are loaded with talent on both sides of the football. If Rodgers can stay healthy and regain his form from before the injury, New York could be a legitimate threat in the AFC.

Joe Douglas has put together an aggressive offseason. It’s clear that the front office is doing everything in its power to push the team back into the playoffs and set them up with a chance to make a deep run.

All of that being said, the roster decisions are not done yet. Douglas and company will need to make more moves in the future to trim the roster or potentially add more talent if that opportunity presents itself.

New York Jets May Cut Shocking Player Before 2024 Season

Marcus Mosher of the 33rd Team recently wrote an article on notable players who could end up being roster cuts. For the Jets, wide receiver Allen Lazard ended up making the list.

“This one is obvious, but it still feels unlikely due to his relationship with Aaron Rodgers. The New York Jets signed Allen Lazard last offseason, but he racked up just 311 yards in 12 starts. His lack of athleticism was an issue, as he never could create consistent separation against 1-on-1 coverage. The Jets knew they had a weakness at receiver this offseason and addressed it, signing Mike Williams and drafting Malachi Corley. There shouldn’t be a roster spot for a soon-to-be 29-year-old receiver who is a glorified tight end.”

Lazard was signed by the Jets mainly due to his relationship with Rodgers in Green Bay. He had become a favorite target for the star quarterback there. Unfortunately, his first year with the Jets was an absolute disaster.

New York went out and brought in both Mike Williams and Malachi Corley. As the article states, with those two onboard, the Jets should release Lazard. He simply isn’t an impact player with his lack of needed skill-sets.

The only thing that could save Lazard’s job at this point in time is his standing with Rodgers. Rodgers has always been a strong supporter of his favorite players. In fact, he has forced decisions to keep certainly players throughout his career simply because of his preferences.

It will be interesting to see what the New York Jets end up doing with Lazard. Will they give him one more chance? Or will they cut him and move forward with a more athletic group at the wide receiver position?

Only time will tell, but it’s clear that patience is running thin in New York when it comes to the veteran wide receiver. If he’s release, he will likely find another team quickly, but his days as an impact receiver in the NFL may very well be over.
